HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support

The course will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to perform First Aid on a casualty. The course is a combination of self-paced online learning which takes approximately 3-4 hours, followed by a 2.5 hour face to face assessment.

You are required to complete the online learning before attending the face practical assessment.

Key Knowledge Areas

  1. First Aid Basics:

    • Understand the legal responsibilities and workplace considerations of providing first aid.

    • Learn about duty of care, obtaining consent, and maintaining confidentiality.

    • Recognise the importance of debriefing, stress management, and personal wellbeing after providing first aid.

    2. Body Systems:

    • Basic knowledge of how the cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, musculoskeletal, and digestive systems work.

    • How these body systems interact in emergency situations.

    3. Injury and Illness Management:

    • Identify signs and symptoms of various injuries and medical conditions (e.g., bleeding, burns, fractures, heart attack, asthma, anaphylaxis).

    • Learn the appropriate management techniques for these conditions.

    4. First Aid Equipment:

    • Understand the different types of first aid kits and equipment.

    • Learn how to use first aid equipment effectively.

    5. CPR and AED Use:

    • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on adults, children, and infants.

    • Learn how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

    6. Infection Control:

    • Learn standard precautions to reduce infection risk.

    • Understand the importance of personal hygiene and using personal protective equipment (PPE).

Key Performance Skills

  1. CPR:

    • Perform at least two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on adult, child, and infant manikins.

    • Use an AED correctly.

    2. Simulated First Aid:

    • Manage an unconscious but breathing casualty.

    • Handle an unconscious and non-breathing casualty, including performing CPR and using an AED.

    • Manage scenarios involving choking, severe bleeding, and shock.

    3. Effective Communication:

    • Provide clear verbal and written reports of incidents.

    • Communicate effectively with emergency services.

    4. First Aid Techniques:

    • Apply correct techniques for managing fractures, dislocations, sprains, and strains.

    • Administer first aid for conditions like asthma, anaphylaxis, heart attack, and stroke.

    • Treat thermal injuries such as burns and heat exhaustion.

    5. Use of Equipment:

    • Use first aid resources like bandages, splints, and auto-injectors correctly.

    • Follow infection control procedures during first aid provision.
